Thomas O’Connor fired an equaliser to earn Gillingham a point.
The home side took a 38th-minute lead when striker Tyler Smith had been allowed to run unchallenged into the Gills’ box also sidestepped Connor Ogilvie before lashing a very low drive past Jack Bonham out of 15 yards.
But Gillingham were rewarded for overdue pressure when impressive substitute Mark Marshall crossed deep from the best and, although Ogilvie’s volley was parried by Anssi Jaakola, O’Connor was on hand to net the rebound from six metres.
A first half of few chances observed Jonson Clarke-Harris nod the ball Bonham after 32 minutes for O’Connor to get clear and back.
Jaakkola did not have a save. Following equalising, but the people looked the likely winners.
While Rovers lost skipper Ollie Clarke, who limped off after 54 gillingham needed to substitute Barry Fuller after only 13 minutes, and right wing-back Josh Hare who had been transported off with 73.
