After sustaining a back injury within her third-round match against Elena Rybakina in 24, wimbledon winner Simona Halep retired by the Wuhan Open.
The world number six, who ended the year as world number one in 2017 and 2018, withdrew when trailing 5-4 in the first set against the Kazakh wildcard.
Meanwhile, the Australian seed Ashleigh Barty qualified for the quarter finals with a win against Sofia Kenin.
Third seed Elina Svitolina progressed from Svetlana Kuznetsova.
US Open and Wimbledon semi-finalist Svitolina, ranked ninth, won 6-4 6-2 as she continues her struggle to get a universe top-eight place that would permit her to defend her title at Shenzhen in October at the WTA Finals.
Romanian Halep, currently third in the race into Shenzhen, stated that the”sharp pain” in her lower spine felt “the identical zone” since the injury that kept her out for 3 months at the end of 2018.
World number two Karolina Pliskova will compete for a spot against Dayana Yastremska in the future Wednesday.
