After claiming a lower back injury in her third-round suit against Elena Rybakina at 24, wimbledon winner Simona Halep retired by the Wuhan Open.
The world number six, that ended the year in 2018 and 2017, withdrew when trailing 5-4 in the first set from the Kazakh wildcard.
Meanwhile, the Australian top seed Ashleigh Barty qualified for the quarter finals with a win from Sofia Kenin.
Third seed Elina Svitolina improved from Svetlana Kuznetsova.
As she continues her battle for a universe top-eight spot that will allow her to defend her name in Shenzhen in October in the WTA Finals US Open and Wimbledon semi-finalist Svitolina won 6-4 6-2.
Romanian Halep, now third in the race to Shenzhen, stated that the”sharp pain” in her lower spine felt “the same zone” since the injury that kept her out for three months at the end of 2018.
World number two Karolina Pliskova will compete to get a place against Dayana Yastremska.
