Developing a cricket team is far from straightforward to building a squad from selecting a group name.
What are they called? What colour will they perform in? Whats their badge look like? Wholl play with them? And so on.
Those were all decisions which needed to be made when The Hundred – a brand new 100-ball contest to be performed for the very first time – had been conceived.
The competition – complete with kits and team names – was launched earlier this month, as soon as the eight new groups at the first sporting draft of the UK will snap up the worlds top players along with the squads will be finalised on Sunday.
But have we got here? BBC Sport looks into the process of constructing up a team to perform in a competition thats completely different to anything found in a cricket field.
At a major shift for cricket in the united kingdom, the teams that are brand newest are franchises – Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, London, Southampton and Cardiff. Once that was determined, the next step was to assign names and build a brand.
The decision to step away from your classic format of domestic cricket meant identities needed to be created for the groups.
To begin with, the England and Wales Cricket Board commissioned study into every one of the seven cities and the surrounding regions , firstly targeting individuals aged 16-24 – the age group the ECB hopes The Hundred can draw – and then those aged around 50.
That research gave that a study on every group to the ECB, pulling out various topics, which have been taken with a company that was branding.
Southern Brave, as an instance, the team which will play in Southampton, were appointed after it was found people within the area had an affinity with the regions countryside.
The moniker of manchester is theOriginals, and it can be a nod to the towns part in shaping the audio scene of decades gone – from The Hacienda nightclub, the Stone Roses and New Order into Oasis.
Trent Rockets are so called because the River Trent runs throughout three of those Nottingham-based teams catchment counties – Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire – along with the Invincibles name was provided to The Oval-based franchise as a subtle reference Invicta, the motto of Kent – among those counties that will feed in the team.
As it came to designing kits, colours which were already associated with football teams were ruled out, significance Manchester Originals, as an instance, will play in black – the function from the Industrial Revolution of the city.
The Manchester strips centrepiece is that the Originals logo, which signifies a bolt in the citys industrial past, and a beehive – a reference to Manchesters worker bee symbol.
Designers have also made a new alphabet with letters created from symbols and prominent Manchester landmarks which will be used around the team in advertisements and posters.
Elsewhere, Birmingham Phoenix may perform orange, a colour selected as a combination of two flags – that the yellow of the West Midlands and the red and yellow of the city of Birmingham.
Additionally, it incorporates the chevrons of the city flag in the plan of the top while Birmingham batsmen will use Indian Premier League-style golden helmets, an effort to appeal to some audience – another goal of The Hundred.
However, what are kits and staff names with no players?
Among the last steps before the tournament starts – it will run at the college vacations from 17 July to 16 – is the player draft of Sundays men.
Each team has so far chosen player and two icons that were neighborhood contracted, and they will fill the remaining areas up in the squads in a draft in London.
Lots of the worlds top players are offered, including Steve Smith, Chris Gayle and Mitchell Starc who have all set their reserve price in the maximum # 125,000. Each team takes it in turns to select to contain two players in each of the cover brackets: # 100,000 # 5 1 125,000, # 75,000, # 60,000, # 50,000, # 40,000 and # 30,000.
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick was operating with Welsh Fire, together with head coach Gary Kirsten, to help identify potential signings and will be at the event on Sunday.
I think that the pitches will probably be fairly decent and created to entertaining cricket, the former Somerset batsman mentioned.
The cornerstone of it will be like that which T20 cricket appears like already but it is about attempting to think quickly on your feet.
Trescothick said he anticipates all groups to need apuzzle spinner, ahigh-class all-rounder,a few of quite good quick bowlers andvery good top sequence players, with Welsh Fire having already secured Englands Jonny Bairstow, Somersets Tom Banton and Glamorgans Colin Ingram – most of whom perform on peak of the purchase.
Welsh Fire will concentrate on regions from Sundays draft with those selections in mind.
We are not going to go into the draft looking for two openers, Trescothick said. Wed be foolish to.
We will attempt to pick out specific people we have identified that will be in key places from the Hundred.
Theres a difference of opinion on how the tournament will play , however, with more players that are traditional being predicted by experienced franchise cricket coach Trent Woodhill and skillsets will soon come to the fore.
I think this competition will fix the balance between bat and ball, explained Woodhill, a high performance adviser for Your Hundred.
The format lets players bowl 10 balls in a row and that will enable bowlers to get on top and keep on top, therefore batsmen like Kane Williamson, Steve Smith and Joe Root are going to be pivotal.
Equally, opening bowlers who swing the ball the likes of David Willey, Mitchell Starc and Mohammad Amir – will probably be prosperous.
The project is far from done post-draft, however. How can you get 15 players who have not ever played with each other buy into creating their brand fresh franchiser and to mould to a group a victory?
Oval Invincibles womens head trainer Lydia Greenway claims thatblank canvas isreally exciting.
I am very clear on the people I need involved and the sort of players also, the former England hitter said.
What I hope happens is that whatever cultures are built, theyre exactly the same for the mens and the girls teams.
Hopefully its not only a womens team feeding off a mens team or even a mens team consuming a womens group. It is a joint up approach and you attempt to show yourself in a way that reflects the people that you have included.
The draft will be streamed on the BBC Sport website and iPlayer and accompanied by a numerical live text commentary about Sunday from 18:50 BST.
How well do you understand exactly the sporting pedigree of those cities?
